Dick and Barb Jones came to the Wet Mountain Valley at a time when a large segment of Highway 69 was still a dirt road, those who had a telephone were on an eight-party line, and the county school dismissed at noon in September so that many of the kids could work in the hay fields.
Much has changed in the past 40 years, but for Dick and Barb, the valley is still home. It is here in the shadow of the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains that they have raised their four children, made life-long friends, and become a part of the small mountain community of Westcliffe.
Dick has been a wrangler, guide, teacher, coach, pastor, and cook, while Barb has devoted almost four decades to the children of Custer County School as a passionate teacher and administrator.
Managing the Lamp Post Lodge now gives them a unique opportunity to bring their compassion for people, and their extensive knowledge of the history and landscape of the area, to share with those who visit this extraordinary part of Godʼs Creation.
